Antique Pottery

Antique pottery is older ceramic ware made by potters. This means it has been created from solids that are neither metal nor organic. Such materials are processed through heat application followed by cooling. Pottery is a major industry today, but it is also one of the oldest human creative forms.

There are major types of antique pottery. These include earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Many of these items have been used purely for function.
Others were developed for decoration.

Antique pottery will often have marks on it. These were included for the identification of the piece. The name of the pattern, symbols or initials of either the person or entity who created them, as well as dates relation to the manufacture of the piece or the establishment of the factory may be included. These are usually found on the underside of the piece but may exist as part of the décor itself. It is important to know that many of these markings are not as reliable today due to forgery.
