Antique Chairs

Antique chairs and their designs have evolved over time along with the history of society. In particular, materials which a group of people had access to and their technological development had a great influence on the furnishings of their time. Generally, periods of furniture may be defined by the wood species which were available at that time as well as the century during which the items were created.

For instance, antique chairs which were made during the reigns of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and other British Tudor monarchs are described as having existed during the Age of the Oak. This ranged for about 1500 to 1660. However, it is good to recognize that most period styles do not have distinctive starts and finishes.

Antique chairs created during the Age of Walnut are roughly dated to between 1600 and 1730. This is not as descriptive of a particular style of furniture as the Age of Oak is. Instead it refers more to the gradual introduction of walnut that happened with improvements in sawing capabilities.
